TOM SHANAHAN COULD HARDLY believe his ears when a call came in from the guy who called himself Agent Irons. Less than an hour earlier he and Buddy Davis had finished their breakfast and then returned to their headquarters to begin the long and arduous task of paperwork. On the way, Shanahan had taken the opportunity to stop at his home, grab a quick shower and change clothes. He’d been seated at his desk, tapping away at his computer and filling in fields of the secondary report when the phone rang at the desk of an agent near him. The agent picked up, grunted some sort of response and then stabbed the hold button.

“Hey, Tom,” he called. “Some guy on the phone calling himself Irons. Says he needs to talk to you right away.”

The name didn’t immediately ring a bell, and then Shanahan realized it was the big blond guy with the cold blue eyes who was part of the trio that duked it out with Hadariik and his friends. Shanahan took a moment or two to gather his thoughts and then nodded for the agent to put the call through. When he picked it up, Irons began speaking immediately.

“Shanahan, this is Irons. We met this morning. You got a minute to talk?”

For just a moment Shanahan experienced something that bordered on irritation. He didn’t really see any reason why he should be cooperating with these guys, especially since they had left so abruptly and provided very little information themselves. Now this Irons guy was calling and actually had the audacity to want to talk. Something about that just didn’t seem right, or fair; then again, nobody had promised him a fair shake in the Bureau.

“Listen, Shanahan,” Irons said without bothering to wait for a reply. “I know you got the raw end of the stick on this. And I know that you feel like you’re being kept in the dark. And maybe on some of the stuff you are. But we got our marching orders, just like you’ve got yours when it comes to Hadariik, and that’s just the game us pawns must play. Fortunately, I’m a reasonable guy, and I happen to think you are, too…at least that’s what my partners think. So in the interest of good relations between us, I’m willing to offer a broken arrow up front.”

The little speech took Shanahan completely off guard at first. He’d expected Irons to begin spouting off a list of demands or ordering him around. He thought a moment, listening to the tone and inflection in the guy’s voice, looking for any deceit. He didn’t get that impression, though. It seemed as if this guy was on the level and Shanahan would’ve been nothing less than a jerk if he wasn’t willing to at least give Irons a chance. After all, they were on the same team and they probably wanted the same things. How did Shanahan know what kind of bureaucracy Irons had to put up with? If his job was anything like Shanahan’s, he probably had his own fair share of red tape.
